I don't own the exclusive rights to selling Mountain Dew and Snickers at the race? Well darn!!! I was hoping to get my business started and see if I could outsell Kelly with his $100 gloves!! Yes, I'll be sure to fuel up on race morning with the breakfast of champions!!!! I'm not planning on moving up to 150 this time. My personal challenge is to win the class a couple of times before I move up and I believe I have 1 first and 2 second place finishes in 145. I do get chewed on regularly by...

We'll have to do a Snickers and Mountain Dew toast at Lund Sunday AM! As for computers in 150, or any class for that matter, remember this - we turned in a 0.0027 in May of 2015 using a stopwatch & a set of notes ONLY, so yep, it can be done. Just ask the team that zeroed the clock in 150 Class way back in ot spit before navigations systems or portable GPS were available in cars. See you in Ely!

Interesting topic. I'll play devils advocate. We do that in #Motorama LIVE land. You know, according to SSCC records, the three most accurate times in the 29 year history of the NORC/SSCC 150 Class are recorded as follows: 0.00, 0.0023, 0.0027. I know for certain the third best time was done on a stopwatch alone, because I was holding said stopwatch. The infamous zero out time happened so long ago, I'd say it's a safe bet it was done on a stopwatch, as well. Sure, some so called "computer...

And a big thanks to Mike Borders, Bob Allyn, and Berry Lowman for all of the help they have given me so far on what to plan for.

Re: New Format for Nevada Open Road Challenge in May 2018!

Tom King ·
Among others, Ken Rees and Lanny Lowman have been doing a LOT of work for all of us on the details of the new format, figuring out the logistics and staging, and talking with Lance Gale and others. THANK YOU! Ken and Lanny also report that mile marker LN-17 is MISSING. This could have been an important waypoint on the northbound leg for many of us. Oh well, that's why they call it a "Challenge". Anyway, I'm looking forward to this, and I appreciate the Board's initiative and how people like...

Yes Tom... why in 115? Do you have a vendetta against your Team Invader friend Barbara Barron who usually runs 115? I just don't think that's very gentlemanly of you treating a wonderful woman that way!! That's akin to bringing a machine gun to a water gun fight! just sayin.... Malcolm Jones

Tom, you got the better of us in May, so our hats are still tipped toward you. We'll miss you in 155 this time around. It's always a bigger challenge when we get to line up against the best of the best! That said, I've got a feeling 155 is going to be stacked with skinny numbers guys this time around. I've already begun my strict training regimen of pounding Snickers and Mountain Dew!

Re: Exact Checkpoint Times per Class

Lanny Lowman ·
Blue, I agree that the check point challenge for a one way event is challenging. Not withstanding the two way event depends upon the two ending times balance to zero or as close to as possible to be the class winners where as the CPC only counts on total addition of times. I suggest that only use the CPC duriing the SSCC and not the NORC 2 way since you are not going to use the CP's as a restart point. It also provides for two devices, and a bqackup, to be available at each finish line as a...

Thanks Tom, I knew you were always on board with the idea. Your welcome to stay in the 110class with the M5 and fight it out with Lowman this year and open up the podium for some others. Now you can coach me how to run the class!

Re: 155mph class

Tom King ·
You're too kind, Rick. Meme and I will be running the NSX in the 120 class in September, and then I'll have to think about whether I have the courage to go 155 next Spring. I guess that's why they call it a "challenge". Although it will be fun to see young Mr. Lowman at the Qualifying School next month, I'll endeavor to stay out of any class either one of them chooses to run. Maybe, however, I can pick up some pointers from them! Thanks again, Rick, for your great support for ORR!

Tom King has seen more zeros on the right side of the decimal point over the years than either one of us has even contemplated. The idea of either of us making him nervous is about the nicest compliment anyone may have ever said about either of us in almost a decade of Open Road Racing!

A Deal is a Deal (Rookies Better Stock Up On Snickers & Mountain Dew)

Berry Lowman ·
They say when one door opens, another one closes. Well, in this case, said previous door may have been left slightly ajar. At least for the moment. Two good ol' Corvette racing boys from the hills of Kentucky made a deal several years ago. Go out to Nevada, enter the Silver State Classic, get straight up to 150 Class, and throw everything at it until they score a win. The deal was, then, and only then, would a driver/navigator seat swap take place. You know, Father and Son, racing toward a...

NOTE - I am speaking about this topic as a competitor ONLY, not in any official capacity. Do not confuse the two. I'm just a racer with an opinion here. Funny thing about the Checkpoint Challenge (CPC). Even if you are not trying to win the CPC, or could care less about the CPC, if you're trying to win your class, and are playing the long odds, you should be trying to run on time in the CPC. Why? Let me explain. In the event of a red flag situation on the SSCC one-way course, if you're in...

Tom - Kudos on a great pot-stirring topic to shake off the wintertime blues! Fewer subjects may spark more furious debate on any ORR forum than stopwatch variance. It's got to be right up there with asking what brand of oil enthusiasts prefer, or which brand of tires are best to run. No matter who you ask, their answer will always be a bit different. Yet, according to a book I read, the answer to all questions in the universe should clearly be 42. Of course! In my humble opinion, the answer...
