Hi Mike, Seems the 2017 Rules book answers your question nicely: "Drivers in the Super Sport Division – 160 Class - must have prior successful SSCC driving experience in the 150/155 mph class or a waiver from the SSCC."

2018 NORC New Registration Procedures & Intent to Register List

Berry Lowman ·
We are proud to announce many exciting new changes to the 2018 Nevada Open Road Challenge (NORC). Most notable, the 2018 NORC will be a 120-mile (technically 119.78-mile) two-way event. Additional details on the new two-way course format will be posted on an all-new version of the www.SSCC.US website, coming soon. Due to time constraints surrounding the new format and extended course distance, space on the 2018 NORC starting grid will be limited to the first 135 vehicles that register* for...

Limited Space Remaining for 2018 NORC Grid

Berry Lowman ·
Good news! You now have a wide open opportunity to grab one of the remaining spots for the limited 135 car grid in the new two-way NORC in May! While most on the 2018 NORC Intent to Register List seized the opportunity to claim their spot in the field, some folks either missed, or opted out of their priority window to register due to changing plans, work schedules, broken cars, or plain old non-responsiveness. Their loss can now be your gain. Unlike previous years, the 2018 NORC event format...

Otherwise, you'll have to unload at Lanes Truck Stop and drive your race vehicles South with the rest of the field. This is...

Let me be the 1st SS car to ask if the Board has done the math on this. First, I thought the road closed at 5am, not 6am. If all the GS and slower cars go before the SS cars. all of the SS car will be sitting until after 10:40 if there are 120 cars at 1 minute apart. We will be sitting on the side of the road for over 5 1/2 hours. then once we go should finish 1st leg around 11:30. I do not know how long it will take to start the 2nd leg, but 1 hour sounds reasonable. If that happens the 1st...

Re: SSCC Board Statement on Tow Rigs, Start Grid Order, & Race Fuel for 2018 NORC Race Day

Tom King ·
I tend to agree with Dave: start the SS cars first for this event. That would eliminate the sweep time (between last 95 and first SS) and reduce the time risk. In the past, the reason for starting the Super Sport last was their higher risk of red flag. However, in the last 10 events most of the SS DNFs were UNL cars. In this two-way event, there is no UNL class, so the risk is reduced. Again, in the last 10 events, the non-UNL SS cars (i.e., 160, 170, and 180) had less than a 9% DNF rate.

Another thought, I know I have only been involved since 2010, but since then there has been 18 DNF with SS or unlimited cars and only 1 has caused a red flag. But 2 times GS cars in the same time frame caused a rad flag. So things that the SS class will cause a red flag is old school, we have come a long way in the safety way of thinking. We are all here to have a safe race!

What about the crew members that support the SS cars/drivers at the start line. They usually drive/are in the tow vehicles. How will they get to the start line to assist the SS cars if they need to get the tow vehicles back to Lund by 6 AM? Will they need to drive a separate car back to the start line after leaving the tow vehicle in Lund? Will there be a shuttle for them and their equipment? There a lot more questions about the logistics, but I hope you get the gist of the problem. Some of...

George - Tow rigs that want to unload at the Rest Area have to be South of the Lund Cattle Guard before 6 AM. They are not to return to back to Lund after unloading, but rather, must stay at the Rest Area for the duration of the race. All starting line crew support staff should be in the tow rigs, at the Rest Area, which is near the starting grid. They will remain there until the tace is over. Any tow rig or persons wishing to go to the Rest Area on Sunday AM, but who also intend to go back...

Thank You to All Racers & Volunteers Who Made this 1st Two-Way NORC a Success!

Berry Lowman ·
On behalf of the entire SSCC organization, we thank each and every one of you who helped make this first running of a two-way NORC a successful event! To all of you who came out to race in this event, we truly appreciate you supporting us in this new endeavor. Change isn't always easy. Yet, after 30 years of hosting our classic one-way race format, we figured you would appreciate a new challenge added to the mix for the May event. Based on all the smiles we saw on Sunday, it appears you did!

Berry, consider the possibility of finding another location for the Shootout; one long enough to bring back a 1.5 mile run like the Mojave Magnum. That's a tough bill to fill but would surely draw more participation.
